I love what Carv 2 has done as a digital ski coach. The real time feedback, post run analysis, and Ski scoring have genuinely helped me improve my technique.
But after a recent visit to Copper Mountain last weekend, I realized something: Carv has the potential to be much more than a coach. It could be a full mountain guide.
I took a ski lesson expecting technical feedback, but what I actually found most valuable was something else entirely. The instructor acted as a guide, showing me where to ski based on our skill level, how conditions were evolving throughout the day, and even how sun exposure was affecting different runs.
For example:
In the morning vs. afternoon, we adjusted runs based on where the sun was hitting
As temperatures rose, we avoided areas that would get slushy
As my confidence grew, we progressed from blues to black diamonds I otherwise would have avoided
This experience unlocked parts of the mountain I never would have explored on my own. Looking at a trail map, I often avoid black diamonds because I assume they’re too steep or too challenging — but with guidance, I realized some were well within my ability.
This is where I think Carv can evolve:
Run Recommendations Based on Skill and Conditions
Carv already understands my skiing ability in detail. Why not use that to recommend specific runs at a given resort?
Dynamic Routing Throughout the Day
Take into account:
Weather (temperature, sun exposure, wind)
Time of day (which slopes soften or ice up)
Snow conditions (groomed vs moguls)
Confidence-Based Exploration
Suggest runs that feel like a natural progression — including black diamonds that match slopes I’ve already skied.
Terrain Intelligence Using Elevation Data
Leveraging datasets like the USGS National Elevation Dataset, Carv could:
Compare slope steepness across runs
Identify similar terrain at new mountains
Recommend runs that match what I’ve successfully skied before
As someone who has to fly to ski and wants to maximize every single day on the mountain, this would be a game changer. It’s not just about improving technique for me, it’s about making the most of limited time, building confidence, and exploring more of the mountain safely.
Carv already feels like a coach in my ear. The next step is making it feel like a local expert guiding my entire day!
