Video integration other than smartphone camera

The video mode is potentially great but not only does it need a second skier to record you but also requires the skier to be able to ski with smartphone in their hand.

It would be great to take video input from hands-free devices worn by the other skier, such as GoPro (as a video file upload?) or Ray Ban Meta* smart glasses (as a WhatsApp call?) or from a drone camera.

  • Ray Ban Meta are camera-enabled smart glasses which can stream video live to a WhatsApp call. If you could take the WhatsApp call as input for recording - that would enable live capture and eliminate the sync challenges existing in the case of video file upload.

    You could start the video by filming a QR code for a few seconds.
    The QR code should point to a time sync server (url, config, or something else).
    When the video is processed, the QR code is recognized by the processing pipeline, retrieves the time configuration from the sync server and uses it to process the rest of the file.
    Said pipeline could also remove the initial seconds of the video in which the QR is in the video.
    This should make the entire process camera agnostic, although potentially fragile if the user doesn’t take good footage of the qr code initially.

    The QR code should be easily accessible/shareable/etc and static, potentially removing the need to have the carv app at all around the filming camera.

    Imagine this scenario:
    - You have carv, open the app, take a screenshot of the QR code. This is also user agnostic!
    - Send the QR code screenshot over to your photographer buddy via whatsapp or whatever.
    - He/She starts every clip by having the phone in front of the camera showing the qr code screenshot for a few seconds
    - Do your skiing with carv.
    - When you get the footage back, upload to carv using your account.
    - Upload is done, processing picks up the sync data from the qr code in the video and syncs it to your carv activity.
    - Magic.

    Needless to say, this QR code can be scanned by any camera (drone, gopro, photographer, webcam, etc) and they would all sync to the same activity.

    A similar application is what GoPro labs does, which uses ‘film this QR code’ to change settings in bulk for their cameras. This is awesome, cause you can have sets of settings in a qr code, and change automagically without having to navigate a single menu.

    Great idea, but the challenge would be to sync the video to the Carv data. Perhaps have Carv generate an identifiable audio pattern through the phone speakers at the start of the run that will be recorded in the video and then used offline to automatically sync the two.

    It would be interesting to know how the Carv App syncs video at the moment. I am assuming some sort of absolute timestamp ? I am guessing ( will have to check ) that an iPhone, for example, embeds some sort of timestamp in to the video, similar to what happens with a broadcast wave file.
