About Maps in Carv
About Maps in Carv
The Carv app uses OpenStreetMap, an open-source mapping platform. If something looks off on the map, you have a few ways to request updates or report bugs:
To Request a Map Update or Report an Issue:
Tap the info button in the bottom-right corner of the map.
Or, go to More > Suggest an Improvement.
Select Report an Issue.
Add a short description.
Tap Submit.
We periodically update Carv’s maps based on changes to OpenStreetMap. You’re also welcome to contribute directly by editing OpenStreetMap yourself.
GPS Data Limitations
GPS Data Limitations
If you’re skiing indoors or in a location with no GPS signal, Carv won’t be able to assign a resort to your session.
If your ski resort isn’t listed in OpenStreetMap, Carv will default to the nearest mapped resort.
Please note: We’re unable to retroactively change your run or resort data.
Carv uses GPS to track and record your ski runs by receiving signals from satellites via your phone’s GPS chip. A strong, stable GPS connection is essential for accurate tracking and performance feedback.
What Happens When GPS Fails
A weak or disrupted GPS connection can cause:
Incomplete runs or no run detection at all.
Inaccurate tracking data, such as:
Straight-line segments when the signal drops and reconnects.
Zigzag distance calculations due to jumpy signals.
GPS drift, where the path follows the pistes loosely but lacks precision.
Fortunately, there are proven steps to improve your GPS accuracy and avoid these issues:
How to Get a Strong GPS Signal
How to Get a Strong GPS Signal
Follow these tips for optimal GPS performance:
Position your phone with a clear view of the sky. Avoid placing it deep inside a backpack.
Avoid dense forested areas where GPS signals may be blocked.
Wait a minute or two after starting the app to allow your phone to lock onto GPS satellites—ideally while standing still outside.
Enable mobile data or connect to Wi-Fi, which can help your device get a faster location fix via A-GPS.
GPS Troubleshooting Steps
GPS Troubleshooting Steps
If you're having trouble with Carv detecting or recording runs, try the following:
Check Location Permissions:
Go to Settings > Apps > Carv > Permissions
Make sure Location is toggled ON
Restart Your GPS:
Restart your phone
Toggle GPS off and then on again
Adjust Battery Settings:
Battery saving modes can interfere with GPS tracking. Make sure Carv is excluded from these optimizations.
Enable Battery Whitelist in Carv:
More > Settings > Battery Whitelist > Toggle ON. If you don’t see this option, update to the latest version of the Carv app.
Disable Battery Saver on Your Device:
Here's how to disable optimization for Carv on various Android devices:
HTC: Settings > Battery > Power Saving Mode > Battery Optimization > Carv > Don’t Optimize
Huawei: Energy Settings > Set to Normal > Add Carv to Protected Apps
LG (Android 6+): Battery & Power Saving > Battery Usage > Ignore Optimizations > Turn ON for Carv
Motorola (Android 6+): Battery > Battery Optimization > All Apps > Carv > Don’t Optimize
OnePlus (OxygenOS): Battery > Battery Optimization > All Apps > Carv > Don’t Optimize
Samsung: Battery > App Power Saving > Details > Carv > Disabled
Sony (Android 6+): Battery > Battery Optimization > Apps > Carv > Don’t Optimize
Xiaomi (MIUI, Android 6+): Settings > Additional Settings > Battery and Performance > Manage Battery Usage > Apps > Carv

AGPS Reset:
To reset A-GPS data
Download GPS Status & Toolbox (link below).
Open the app and go to Menu > Tools > Manage A-GPS State > Reset.
GPS Testing:
Try recording a Free Ski session for 10 minutes with your phone completely still and a clear view of the sky. If Carv still doesn’t record properly, try using another fitness tracker app to confirm GPS is functioning.
GPS Status Check:
The GPS Status & Toolbox app can also show real-time GPS data, including satellite count and accuracy. A good signal should show 5+ satellites and <30m accuracy.
If you’ve followed all the above steps and are still having issues, please contact our support team. You can also report the issue directly through the app:
Swipe left with two fingers or go to More > Suggest an Improvement
